Nonprofit Offers Cleaning Services to Families with Cancer in Southwest Florida
The flowers are blooming, the water is warming up, and the temperatures are manageable outside. These are all signs pointing to spring in Southwest Florida.
For some, this time of the year also means spring cleaning is here.
“Spring cleaning has been around for over 3,000 years,” Organize It SWFL Owner Libby Delucian said.
It turns out humans have a natural circadian rhythm that kicks in this time of year. That is what gives us the urge to reorganize our space and throw out things we do not use. Spring cleaning sometimes seems like a tall task, which is why Delucian cleans and organizes for a living.
“Schedule a timer, maybe do 15-minute segments, so you don’t get too overwhelmed,” she said.
If you are looking for a deep clean, Delucian said one thing can make life a whole lot easier.
“Make sure you have the proper tools because cleaning without the proper tools makes the job much harder,” she said. “We use envirox, a particular type of cleaning that is a disinfectant.”
Although it can be intimidating, the pandemic is proof that cleaning is beneficial to our overall health.
“Spring cleaning is actually super important,” she said. “We learned from COVID-19 that cleaning is now more essential than ever.”
For Elizabeth White, a clean and disinfected home means having peace of mind.
That is because her husband’s immune system is compromised. He is undergoing cancer treatment, and White is his main caretaker.
Since his diagnosis, she has noticed cleaning her house has fallen to the bottom of her to-do list.
“You do not you do not have time; you’re running to radiation treatments every day and cancer treatment twice a week, and you’re on phone calls to the doctor’s offices, and there’s so much involved in cancer treatments,” she said.
While at one of her husband’s appointments, she heard about the nonprofit ‘Cleaning for a Reason.’ They partner with cleaning companies across the country, like Organize It SWFL, and provide services to families battling cancer; all for free.
“So far it served 53,000 patients and has over $18 million in cleaning donated throughout the U.S.,” Delucian said.
From dusting to mopping and cleaning the floors, Delucian and her cleaning crew have helped 75 families across Southwest Florida. White’s family in North Fort Myers is one of them.
“Our technicians love providing cleaning service for cancer patients because I feel like it makes a difference,” Delucian said. “They do feel the difference it makes.”
White said this support is crucial. But now that her husband’s treatments are complete, she is ready to get back to normal.
“Hopefully we can get back to normal and then I can go back home to cleaning my own house,” she said.
She is looking forward to her husband’s full recovery.
