From house cleaning to heartfelt connections: one volunteer’s journey
Philadelphia, PA – July 29, 2024 – Kathleen Albertson, a Philadelphia native, has woven compassion into the fabric of her community. Surviving domestic abuse fueled her commitment to women’s issues, inspiring her unwavering pledge to support those in need. “As I got better, I swore I would never not help someone in need,” she said.
In 2012, Albertson was hired by Professional Building Services, Inc. (PBS) to deepen their partnership with Cleaning for a Reason, a charity providing free house cleaning to cancer patients. Since then, PBS has proudly continued its sponsorship of multiple residential cleaning companies in the program, providing support to 575 cancer patients.
During a volunteer session with Cleaning for a Reason, Albertson and a PBS volunteer team cleaned a patient’s home that was in complete disarray. Cleaning and tidying up the home restored its cleanliness, order, and manageability, but it was only part of how they helped.
“We gave her someone to talk to and connect with,” Albertson shared. “She was thankful to have her house cleaned, but also just thankful that we were there. She was so happy with the experience that when I threw a fundraiser for Cleaning for a Reason, she decided to go out and collect donations for the raffle.” Much more than cleaning, the experience highlighted the power of connection and support, fueling Albertson’s ongoing dedication.

Albertson’s commitment extends to various causes including the Go Red for Women passion committee, the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, and Helen’s Angels, supporting families affected by breast cancer. Supported by Allan Industries, her current employer, Albertson actively engages with cancer patients through events, local support gatherings, and personal connections, ensuring they do not face their challenges alone.
Albertson’s exceptional ability to build lasting relationships has been instrumental in raising over $75,000 for Cleaning for a Reason since 2011. Collaborating with local companies and organizations like Allan Industries, PBS, and the Philadelphia Building Managers and Operators Association (PBMOA), she amplifies her impact, ensuring more families benefit from the charity’s essential services. Albertson infuses fun into fundraising with events like Fabulous Shoe Nights (a.k.a. girls’ night out), holiday raffles, Jeopardy tournaments, ping pong and bowling tournaments, and a fashion show featuring cancer survivors as models. These vibrant events not only raise funds but also foster community spirit and support for those in need.
Another poignant experience involved a Stage 4 breast cancer survivor with four children who initially declined free cleaning, feeling others were more deserving. Albertson persisted, recognizing the critical nature of the assistance. Eventually, the patient accepted, marking the beginning of a transformative journey. Inspired by Albertson’s dedication and the support she received, the patient began volunteering and fundraising alongside Albertson, sharing her story of resilience and gratitude.
“It’s incredible to witness someone who initially declined help out of humility and selflessness now inspiring others with her courage,” Albertson reflected. “Her journey embodies the core values of Cleaning for a Reason—compassion, resilience, and community.”
Their shared commitment to giving back has deepened their bond, demonstrating the enduring impact of compassion and solidarity in adversity. “Despite their own hardships, many are eager to pay it forward,” Albertson observed. “It’s inspiring to see our efforts create a cycle of help and hope.”
In 2024, while Albertson’s sister bravely battled terminal breast cancer, Cleaning for a Reason and 3K Cleaning Service, LLC, provided indispensable support. “Led by owner Kaleandra Vicks, these ladies did an incredible job—every detail gleamed anew. Their compassion and dedication were a lifeline during such a challenging time, and I’m deeply grateful,” Albertson shared.
Patricia Regan, sister of Kathleen Albertson, received Cleaning for a Reason services during her battle with terminal breast cancer.
Experiencing firsthand the profound impact of these services on her own family continues to fuel Albertson’s dedication to advocating for Cleaning for a Reason. “This personal journey as a recipient of Cleaning for a Reason’s services drives my ongoing commitment to volunteer and fundraise. I feel a deep connection to these patients and recognize the significance of every contribution.”
Currently serving as an account manager at Allan Industries Inc., Kathleen Albertson remains dedicated to illuminating lives with compassion and unwavering commitment.
