CLEANING IS CARING THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Charlotte, NC – March 4, 2026 – In 2005, HeavenlyScent Cleaning, LLC of Buckner, KY, partnered with Cleaning for a Reason to provide free house cleanings to women undergoing cancer treatment, reflecting the organization’s mission at that time.
Founded by retired oncology nurse Karen Leaton, HeavenlyScent Cleaning was built on compassion long before it was built on business. Karen’s life was marked by honorable service — not only to her country, but to her community.
She served as an officer in the United States Navy, working as a nurse on the Oncology Unit and in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health. Her military career reflected discipline, excellence, and a profound commitment to caring for others during some of their most vulnerable moments.
Yet her service did not end when she hung up her uniform. It simply took on a new form.
After years of caring for women battling cancer, Karen had witnessed firsthand how treatment makes everyday tasks — keeping a house in order, grocery shopping, caring for children — feel overwhelming.
“Simple tasks in life and in the home become burdensome,” Karen shared during her initial interview with the nonprofit. Through her partnership with Cleaning for a Reason, she found a way to reconnect with women battling cancer — “ironically, through a simple idea that became a tangible benefit: house cleaning.”
Between 2005 and the sale of her business in 2015, HeavenlyScent Cleaning supported 13 women with cancer, providing donated house cleanings valued at nearly $5,000. For Karen, the impact was never measured in dollars alone, but in dignity, relief, and the quiet comfort of a clean, healthy home during one of life’s most difficult seasons. Her work became an extension of her nursing heart — serving families in her community with the same devotion she once offered in uniform. Following her sale of HeavenlyScent Cleaning, Karen obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing Innovation and returned to her passion of for caring for those in critical need.
A Legacy That Came Full Circle
In a poignant and deeply meaningful turn, Karen herself faced an advanced cancer diagnosis of Waldenström Lymphoma with Secondary AL Amyloidosis in October 2025. During that season, the mission she once championed came full circle when fellow Cleaning for a Reason partner Minit Maids, Inc. of Charlotte, NC, stepped in to serve Karen’s own family.
Her husband, Richard Leaton, shared, “As Karen battled cancer last year, Minit Maids showed extraordinary kindness and compassion when my family needed it most. They stepped up without hesitation and provided a ‘Cleaning for a Reason’ service for our home. It was an act of generosity and humanity I will never forget. With very little notice, they were able to put us on a weekly cleaning schedule and continued caring for our home from the time my wife became ill until she passed away in January 2026, just before our move out of the area. During an incredibly difficult season, they brought order, calm, and beauty into our home — something that mattered deeply to my wife and to me.”
“Their flexibility, professionalism, and genuine compassion made a real difference in our daily lives. They helped keep our home looking the way she would have wanted and enjoyed, and that gift cannot be overstated. I am profoundly grateful for their kindness, their reliability, and their willingness to help during such a painful time. They are far more than a cleaning service — they are people who truly care.”
Karen’s life beautifully embodied the heart of Cleaning for a Reason’s mission: serving cancer patients with compassion, businesses acting with purpose, and communities rallying around families in need. Her compassion did not end when she sold her business; it lived on in the example she set and in the patients she served.
Karen Leaton’s story is a powerful reminder that service is not confined to a uniform or a career. It is a way of living. Whether caring for patients in a military oncology unit, building a business rooted in compassion, or supporting those in her local community through life’s hardest battles, she lived a life of honorable service. Today, her legacy stands as a testament to the quiet power of generosity — and to the truth that acts of service ripple forward in ways we may never fully see, until perhaps they return to comfort us when we need them most.
