Sherry Lee Towne, a resident of Neversink, donates her cleaning services once a month to a female cancer patient through the Cleaning For A Reason Foundation.
NEVERSINK, NEW YORK — There are over 100 different known types of cancers that affect the human species, with the most common being: breast, prostate, basal cell, colon and lung cancers, as well as melanoma, leukemia and lymphoma. The medical costs of hospitalization and treatments can often be debilitating to an individual. That’s where Cleaning for a Reason comes in.
Cleaning for a Reason is a nonprofit organization out of Lewisville, Texas, with services throughout the United States and Canada. Their services are available over such a wide range due to their 1,200 or more cleaning partners. Their sole mission is to provide housecleaning services completely free of charge, to women aged 19 and over, that are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, allowing them to focus on their health. Each partner of the organization donates just a few cleanings each month.
Sherry Lee Towne, a resident of Neversink, after discovering the organization online, didn’t hesitate one moment before calling to become a partner of the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation in early February.
“I have my own cleaning company, Houndstooth Clean,” said Towne, “and when I saw this, I thought it was a great program and a great project.”
Debbie Sardone, President and Founder of Cleaning for a Reason, started the organization in response to a phone call she received as the then owner of her own personal cleaning business. An individual called and asked for cleaning services and when discovering the cost, stated that she had cancer, couldn’t afford it and quickly hung up the phone. From that moment, Sardone vowed that no other woman undergoing cancer treatment would be turned away and instead, would be offered free housecleaning service.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be able to provide someone in need with this service,” said Towne. “As of right now, I have one client with cancer. I clean for her once a month for the duration of four months, which actually coincides with her treatments. It’s exciting to be a part of this because it’s a wonderful way to reach out to the community. It’s a great cause.”
According to Towne, she is the only cleaning company in the Sullivan County area that is currently part of the organization and has hopes to get more companies/individuals involved.
“Cleaning for a Reason has serviced over 20,000 women undergoing cancer treatments so far,” stated Towne, “and this month marks their 10th year anniversary.”
